PRESIDENT’s update
Dr Tania Bezzobs
ARMS President
Dear ARMS enthusiasts,
Welcome to this special Up in ARMS post conference edition! I am writing from the
Gadigal lands of the Eora nation in Sydney, following my flight from Larrakia lands
to the lands of Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation in Melbourne. I did suffer with many of you on the red-eye flight back to where we came from. But what’s lack of sleep between friends. There was hail in Melbourne on Sunday, which was a little bit rude after the mid-30 deg C temperatures!
Our COO, Maria Zollo and the ARMS Executive team asked me to share my highlights from the conference, which I will also post on LinkedIn. However, I have been a little daunted in doing this as there are so many highlights, that I am not quite sure where to start. But here goes... Some of you will know that for me, this is the Year of the “P’s”, so I will use that in my framing of my highlights.
Plenaries, Presentations, Panels and Posters
From plenaries to panels to presentations and posters, I was inspired in so many ways. Our opening keynote by Professor Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman (delivered by Professor Shaliza Ibrahim) took us on a journey in relation to the key elements and emerging challenges for global research and what we can do as research management professionals. The message that most strongly resonated for me was the importance of equitable and equal partnering and collaboration. I was moved and a little saddened but also hopeful while listening to Dr Billy Garvey talking about his work in paediatric mental health. The Pop Culture Parenting podcasts are also a wonderful example of knowledge translation that is making a difference to many parents. We were also privileged to hear Professor Emma Lee share with us her personal and professional experiences and exhort us to care for Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property by becoming contract warriors. Professor Toby Walsh and the associated Panel enlightened us on the challenges of research productivity and integrity in a digital age. In our Friday morning keynote, I was enthralled listening to Professor Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair discuss the concept of “Return on Value” rather than Return on Investment, and most importantly, how we can apply it practically in a research organisation context. Finally, the panel session on the complexity of research translation and the importance of data reminded me (and I am only speaking for myself), how much more there is to know and learn, which is why research management is so interesting.
And of course, our parallel sessions were engaging and informative. Everyone has their own journey in terms of what they went and listened to, but in the sessions that I attended, I was really impressed by the significant effort and care that was put into preparation and delivery. This also followed through into the poster presentations.
People
This should be self-obvious! Those who attended and helped make the conference happen are the people – they are you! A special shout out is also extended to our Conference Committee led by our wonderful Co-Convenors, Steve Hannan and Dr Tan Hsiao Wei. What came through to me was the humanity that many of you shared. Thank you for sharing and others for caring. As was said by many, it’s not just what you do but how you do it.
I’d also like to personally thank Janet Dibb-Leigh for joining us for our 25th year, presenting our highest Award named in her honour to Ms Michelle Duryea, and for the many other members who attended the conference were there in the early days of ARMS. I should also call out our two Fellow of ARMS awardees, Ms Jane Holt and Dr Floris van der Leest. All other award winners should be proud of their achievements and are featured in this newsletter (keep scrolling!).
Place
Darwin and surrounds!!! Thank you, Darwin/ NT, for your gorgeous sunsets, the glorious surrounds and of course Crocosaurus Cove. We were thrilled to be given the opportunity to showcase this region so effectively and to explore research and innovation that is unique to this region.
Partners
Our partners are many folds, they are our conference sponsors, our exhibitors and our support people. Thank you to everyone for making this gathering a successful one!
Party
This is code for an awesome conference dinner including our Awards ceremony. We donned our best tropical outfits and boogied to the band, who said that we were fabulous, which we were... And how can we forget about our wonderful ARMS Choir who belted out 3 fantastic tunes. Thank you to all our volunteer Choir members. We look forward to your performance next year! See video below.
Participation
It’s now time to end this summary of my highlights of the conference. (With thanks to Co-Pilot). The period for me to provide a portrayal of my personal picks from the conference has now passed. I proffer my profound appreciation to you all in propelling our Darwin conference to such a praiseworthy pinnacle with your presence and participation. I look forward to perceiving many of you at the next period in Melbourne!
Or in other words……
Thank you so much for making our Darwin conference so memorable through your participation. I hope to see many of you in Melbourne!! #ARMS2025
A question for you to reflect on…What will you be doing differently returning from the conference?
Finally, our Annual General Meeting was held yesterday where we announced our newest members on the ARMS Board. We congratulate Hannah Allan, Dr Louise Dwyer, Amber Jennings and Tara McLaren! I also wish to acknowledge our departing Board Members Kate Swanson, Dr Brett Szmajda and Dr Yordanka Krastev. See announcement below for full details.
Yours in ARMS.
