NEWSLETTER OF ARMS

JULY - AUGUST 2024

PRESIDENT’s update

Dr Tania Bezzobs

ARMS President

Dear ARMS Colleagues,

What a year it has been so far, and the rest is equally busy and exciting! I’d like to mention a few

important updates.

  • ARMS Darwin conference – Less than 20 days to go! We now have more than 560 delegates

.......registered to attend, which I am really thrilled to see. If you haven’t already, it’s not too late

to register to learn, connect and network with Research Management colleagues across

Australasia and beyond. Refer to article in newsletter.

  • The Executive Office is expanding – From Monday the 26th of August, we will be advertising a new role “Partnerships, Education and Policy Manager”. The role is focused largely on expanding partnerships engagement, policy support and business development to support the growth of ARMS’ membership base and help support ARMS’ mission in advocating the importance of research management. The ideal candidate would be someone with a strong background in partnership management, business development, policy and advocacy within a not for profit or similar organisation. Visit the job opportunities page on the ARMS website on Monday the 26th of August for full details. Applications close 20th of September. You’ll be able to talk with us about the role at the conference if you are interested.

  • Update from the ARMS Board at its meeting of 26 July
    • Endorsement was given for the establishment of a new Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research Management as well as a separate Working Group in AI. An official launch of the AI SIG is expected no later than early October. The purpose of the AI Working Group is to inform the ARMS Board on AI strengths, threats and opportunities in research management and will held guide the creation and implementation of an AI Strategy for ARMS.
    • Strategic plan – The Board also spent considerable time reviewing a second draft of the Strategic Plan. Further refinements are being made with a launch anticipated at the end of 2024.

  • Elections and Annual General Meeting (AGM) Reminder – It is the year of elections! Across the world we are seeing the importance of democracy played out. It’s sometimes fascinating and sometimes very concerning as people try to have their voice heard. For those of you who are voting members of ARMS, you will have been sent a voting link from OpaVote for Board Elections. This is your opportunity to choose the next generation of the ARMS Board and future President. Voting closes 4 September. Be heard! Our next Annual General Meeting is also coming up. This will be an online meeting that is no longer held at the annual conference which will enable all member access to attend the AGM, not only those attending the conference. The online meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, the 18th of September from 12 Noon – 1 PM AEST. The AGM papers are scheduled for circulation on Friday the 6th of September and will be accessible via the ARMS Portal. Please put that date in your diary.

  • Consultation on Commonwealth Whole of Government (WoG) grant templates suite – I recently had a brief meeting with the Australian Government Department of Finance who are undertaking a review of the Whole of Government (WoG) grants template suite The government is undertaking a comprehensive review of these templates to ensure that they are still fit for purpose and achieving the aims of the templates. Feedback is now being sought on these templates by 6 September 2024. Please contact your Legal Office or relevant contact in your Research Office if you wish to provide feedback.

  • Research Administrators Day Celebration 25 September 2024 – This is a day to celebrate us and to let others know about the importance of us! Please refer to the article in newsletter.

Finally, with so much going on in your professional lives as well as the rest of your lives, it’s important to take care, take time to pause, reflect, look up and around, acknowledge and celebrate the little and the bigger wins, and what’s matters to you. I look forward to seeing you at the conference to hear and share.

Yours in ARMS

CHAPTER SIG NETWORK UPDATES

The NSW Chapter recently held a hybrid event with Catherine McElhone (ARMS Research Impact SIG and UTS) on Empowering Change: Research Impact for Research Management Professionals at UTS. Short presentations were followed by a panel discussion around the intersection of research management and research impact support led by Shantala Mohan (NSW Chapter Committee Co-Convenor).

Shantala Mohan (WSU) started her new role on the committee as Co-Convenor from August 2024 working with Co-convenor Emmaline Lear (CSU) Co-Convenor). The Committee also saw the departure of three Committee members and are currently interviewing new members. With sincere thanks for the work and strong contribution to the NSW Chapter from departing members:

  • Stephan Waibel (UTS), Co-convenor June 2023-Aug 2024. Committee Term Aug 2020-Aug 2024.
  • Tanya Karliychuk (Australian Communications Consumer Action Network), Co-convenor Aug 2022-Jan 2024). Committee Term: Aug 2020-Aug 2024.
  • Roy McBurney (USyd), Online Event Coordinator Nov 2023-May 2024. Committee Term Oct 2022-May 2024.

Chapter members gathered on 20 June for a casual night of fun and catch-up at the picturesque poolside Las Palmas Rooftop Bar located at Courtyard Marriott, Novena. Ten members gathered for a social evening here, over light drinks and finger food, with panoramic views of the city-state as the sun set.

Members actively discussed their views on the Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence and planned the calendar of events for the current financial year.

The evening served as a refreshing break from a busy week and a valuable opportunity to individually connect with colleagues from across Singapore. The enthusiasm for future gatherings with even more members was palpable, leaving everyone eager for the next event.

Buildable Christmas Backgrounds (With Outline) Garland

We are delighted to announce that the Victorian Chapter Committee is now at full complement. If you attended our fabulous event in July (read about it below), you might have met some of our new committee members. Otherwise, we will be introducing new members and farewelling outgoing members in the next edition of Up in ARMS.

Twas the night before Christmas (in July), and members of the Victorian Chapter braved a Wintery Melbourne night to descend upon the Captain Melville pub for an evening filled with a Christmas themed networking dinner and drinks. Upon arrival attendees were welcomed by a venue that had been meticulously decorated in Christmas fair complete with Christmas trees, candy canes, tinsel, and ‘A Muppet Christmas Carol’ playing from a projector in the background! Members who attended enjoyed a two-course meal complete with all the Christmas trimmings including the option of a delicious warm mulled cider.

The event presented an invaluable opportunity for members to catch up with colleagues and friends, to make new connections, and to recognise and acknowledge all the fantastic achievements from the first half of what already feels to have been a very busy year. It was fantastic to see such a large turnout for an event and to see so many Chapter members having a great time and being deep in conversation with their Chapter colleagues. The event also provided an opportunity for the Chapter Committee to welcome our newest members of the committee: Renee Clapham, Laura Liao, Bedrich Eckhardt, and Cody Jackson. Overall, the event was a resounding success, thank you to everyone who attended

Australasian Ethics Network (AEN) Conference

The AEN are pleased to announce that the biennial conference will be taking place in 2025 Newcastle, Australia from 5-7 November. We have convened a fabulous conference sub-committee who are working on an exciting program for the upcoming conference. Watch this space for more information including the conference themes and sub-themes.
